Teen Texting and Driving: Communication and Contracts

By now you should know that texting and driving is a serious, deadly problem. It’s an epidemic that is threatening the lives of drivers across the country—especially our teenagers. Because texting is a standard form of communication for this age group, the temptation to text while behind the wheel is high, and it’s not only hurting them, but also the drivers around them. As a parent, you probably agonize over this topic. How can you know that your son or daughter is being responsible and keeping his or her eyes on the road? How do you know if their friends are doing the same thing? Yes, restricting their phone use is a good way to handle it, but it doesn’t completely cut to the heart of the matter: responsibility. At D&R Autoworks, we are sincerely passionate about the subject of texting and driving, and we want our teenagers especially to be safe on the roads. And, as family men and women, we also want to help our parents out there handle the topic as best the ... read more

Back in the Swing!

Back in the Swing!

School’s back in session once again, and we can almost hear the sounds. Groans from kids who miss the summer, bells ringing in crowded hallways, lockers slamming, computers clicking, and parents everywhere singing a hallelujah chorus. It’s a mixture of chaos and excitement, and it’s one of the liveliest times of year. In an effort to help our customers who have kids make it through the first week or two of school, we at D&R Autoworks want to offer a few tips that can help take the stress out of the new routine. It’s a challenging time, but it can be made easier by being prepared and intentional. First, it’s important to establish a routine. During those first few days, find your footing. Keep a good calendar for times, activities and events, and make sure your kids are aware of what each day holds. Do both them and yourself a favor by being in the know and ready for what’s ahead. This will help alleviate stress and lessen the opportunity for confusion and conflict ... read more

School Crosswalk Safety

School Crosswalk Safety

It’s hard to believe that school will be starting in just a few days. As usual, summer flew by and we’ve found ourselves on the brink of another exciting semester! Kids everywhere are excited to use their new school supplies, and parents are grateful to have a little silence back in the house. At D&R Autoworks, we love our students and want to make sure they are safe and prepared for the year ahead. That’s why this month we’ve been blogging about matters other than auto issues. Instead, we’ve been doing what we can to help parents and kids get ready for school by using our car-minded wisdom to help prepare them for the year ahead. This week, we’re talking about crosswalk safety. Many schools have crossing guards who help kids make it from one side to the other, but that doesn’t always prevent disaster. Inattentive motorists, disobedient children and basic random accidents make crosswalks a place where there is always the potential for danger. With a littl ... read more

School Bus Safety

School Bus Safety

It won’t be long before we see them again…those big, yellow machines that carry our precious cargo to and from school every day: school buses. Whether your kids love them or hate them, these buses provide a valuable service to our communities and to busy parents. We trust them and their drivers with our children and pray that they never break down or find their way into any kind of accident. When it comes to school bus safety, however, part of the responsibility lies on us. The school does its part to keep the vehicles working, and the drivers hold up their end of the deal by obeying traffic laws and maintaining their training. The rest is up to us—and our kids. This fall, one of the best things you can do to make sure your kids have a positive school experience is by talking to them about school bus safety and what behaviors are appropriate when traveling to and from school. It starts at the bus stop. While they may be tempted to run and play with the ... read more
